Early life
Sapp was born in Orlando, Florida, and raised in Plymouth, Florida, by a single mother, Annie Roberts. At Apopka High School in Apopka, Florida, he played linebacker, tight end, kicker, and punter, setting school records for sacks, tackles for a loss, and longest field goal. He also played basketball as a power forward. In 2007, Sapp was named to the Florida High School Association All-Century Team.
Professional career
Sapp ran the fastest 40-yard dash for a defensive tackle (4.69 seconds) ahead of the 1995 NFL draft. Despite reports of failed drug tests released the night before the draft, he was selected 12th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He started immediately at right defensive tackle and thrived in the Tampa 2 defense alongside Derrick Brooks and John Lynch. He finished his rookie season with 27 tackles and one interception, then recorded 51 tackles and nine sacks in 1996, and 58 tackles and 10.5 sacks in 1997.
His first of seven straight Pro Bowl selections came in 1997. In 1998, he signed a six-year, $36 million contract extension. He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1999. In 2002, the Buccaneers led the league in defense and won Super Bowl XXXVII; Sapp made five tackles and two sacks that postseason.
On November 24, 2002, he was criticized for a blindside hit on Green Bay Packers' Chad Clifton that caused a severe pelvic injury; the NFL later made such hits illegal. Sapp finished his career with 96.5 sacks, third-highest for a defensive tackle.
Coaching career
Sapp joined the Colorado Buffaloes football staff in 2024 as a senior quality-control analyst and graduate assistant while taking graduate courses at the University of Colorado Boulder. He assisted the defensive line and mentored pass rushers despite having no prior formal coaching experience. In 2025, he was promoted to defensive pass-rush coordinator; the team improved sack production in 2024 but regressed in 2025, finishing near the bottom nationally in sacks during a 3–9 season. In February 2026, Colorado announced that Sapp had resigned after two seasons to pursue other professional opportunities.
Personal life
Sapp married Jamiko Vaughn in January 1998; they divorced in 2007 and had two children, daughter Mercedes (1998) and son Warren Sapp II (2000). In 2023, he earned a bachelor of arts in Christian sports management from Texas Seminary Christian University. In 2006, he helped create an Urban Solutions Group to build low-income housing in Fort Pierce, Florida, but the project failed after the real-estate market declined. He worked as a studio analyst for Inside the NFL on Showtime from 2008 to 2011.
In fall 2008, he was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, finishing as runner-up with partner Kym Johnson. He made his stand-up comedy debut at the Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy in March 2009. He worked for NFL Network until his 2015 firing after an arrest for solicitation. In 2012, he released a book titled Sapp Attack and teamed with the Network of Champions to produce a show called Judge Sapp.
He also participated in Fox's dating game show The Choice. In January 2013, he worked with Dr. Jonathan Greenburg to raise awareness about sleep apnea testing. He served as a celebrity judge on BBQ Pitmasters. On July 27, 2016, he was bitten by a shark while lobstering off Florida.
In October 2020, he co-hosted the podcast BetUS Unfiltered with Brian Jones. On February 7, 2010, he was arrested for domestic battery but the charges were dropped on March 24.
