Nealis began his career with Massapequa SC and played for Massapequa High School. He captained Georgetown University to their first NCAA national championship in 2019 and was named Defensive Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. He was selected third overall by Inter Miami CF in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft, later traded to Nashville SC in 2021, and then to New York Red Bulls in December 2021. He scored his first professional goal in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup and signed a new contract with Red Bulls through 2024.

The BMO Stadium lights hummed their low orange glow over the empty seats. It was a Tuesday night, midweek, and the crowd was thin—maybe four thousand in the lower bowl. Nealis stood in the centre circle, left boot resting on the ball, scanning. The Dallas back four were compact, pressing in a line. He felt the weight of the match on his shoulders, the kind of weight that isn't about scoring but about not losing the ball in the wrong zone.

He turned, felt the grass give under his stud, and played a short pass to the left centre-back. Then another. Then another. The metronome. The opposing midfielders stepped up, and he felt the pressure close in. Instead of forcing it, he dropped one step, let the ball roll to his left foot, and flicked a no-look switch across the pitch to the right winger who was now running into open space. The stadium exhaled. The rhythm held. That was the Nealis game—no fireworks, just the right pass at the right second, over and over, until the defence forgot to press and the attack found its seam.
