Did You Know?
- Ed Hogan from Allmusic gave the album a mixed review, calling it derivative but also one of Jackson's better post-Motown albums.
- The lead single Word to the Badd reached number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100.
- The second single You Said, You Said peaked at number 25 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Background
Jackson was the first big-name artist to sign with LaFace Records, as he noted. The LaFace Family—L.A. Reid, Babyface, Kayo, and Daryl Simmons—produced the entire 1991 album. Unlike his earlier work, You Said underperformed commercially and never charted on the Billboard 200. A controversial early version of "Word to the Badd" targeted his brother Michael with harsh lyrics. That version was left off the US release, but both the original and a rewritten take appeared on the international edition. In 2009, Jackson’s Arista albums were reissued in Japan on CD with extra tracks. The You Said reissue followed the international edition, so it included the original "Word to the Badd."
