Lore & Background
Ou Ki is a veteran general who fought alongside Shou Bun Kun, but not Great General Kyo, who was from an earlier generation. He is the target of Hou Ken (Pang Nuan), the 'War God' who defeated Ou Ki nine years prior. Ou Ki suspected Hou Ken's involvement, which is why he agreed to take the post of commander-in-chief. On the battlefield, he demonstrates strategic brilliance by tricking Zhao General Fuki into moving both wings of his army, leaving his headquarters vulnerable. He also shows caution, ordering his commanders not to advance beyond where they can see Zhao's former mountaintop headquarters, correctly deducing that a mystery commander was calling the shots. Ou Ki later names the Hi Shin Unit as a reward for Li Xin's role in the assassination mission, not before.
Reader's Guide
Ou Ki's leadership is defined by strategic foresight and trust in his subordinates. He personally trains Shin in the lawless lands, backing the weakest tribe to help Shin succeed. As Commander-in-Chief, he devises a battle plan that lures Zhao's wings into attacking Qin's left army, leaving Fuki's headquarters unguarded. He entrusts Shin with the critical assassination mission, providing the name 'Hi Shin Unit' as a reward. After the battle, he correctly deduces that Zhao's retreat was a trap and issues strict orders to prevent his troops from advancing too far. His past defeat by Hou Ken nine years prior and his suspicion of a hidden commander drive his decisions, adding a personal dimension to the conflict.
General Ou Ki's Strategic Leadership
In Kingdom 3: The Flame of Destiny, General Ou Ki transitions from a mentor in the lawless lands to Commander-in-Chief of the Qin army. He accepts this role after hearing King Ying Zheng's reasons for unifying China. During the battle against Zhao, he tasks Li Xin and his 100-man unit with assassinating General Fuki, recognizing that eliminating key strategists is crucial. His strategy involves luring Zhao's wings into attacking Qin's left army, leaving Fuki's headquarters vulnerable. After Fuki's death, Ou Ki suspects a hidden mastermind behind Zhao's retreat and orders his commanders not to advance beyond visible enemy positions. This suspicion proves correct when Hou Ken is revealed as the hidden commander.
The Birth of the Hi Shin Unit
General Ou Ki formally establishes the Hi Shin Unit by bestowing the name upon Li Xin's 100-man unit as a reward for accepting the assassination mission against General Fuki. The unit scales a steep cliff under fire, losing one man thrown to his death. Through a diversion led by Yugi, Shin and a smaller group breach the enemy headquarters and kill Fuki. The unit suffers 31 casualties. Ou Ki tells them that because of their deed, their unit will become known across all of China. This moment solidifies the unit's identity within the Qin military structure.
The Shadow of Hou Ken
The film introduces Hou Ken (Pang Nuan), also known as Bushin 'War God,' as a hidden Zhao commander. He is revealed to be the one who killed Great General Kyo and had defeated Ou Ki nine years prior. Hou Ken approaches the Hi Shin Unit's campsite carrying a scythe and begins killing the men. Ou Ki had suspected a hidden mastermind behind Zhao's retreat, which is why he agreed to become commander-in-chief. The revelation that Hou Ken is targeting him adds personal stakes to the broader conflict.
