The game is set in the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1403, during the reign of King Wenceslaus IV. Before the events of the game, Bohemia experienced a golden age under Charles IV. After Charles' death in 1378, Wenceslaus proved an idle and frivolous ruler, and a nuisance to the nobility. The nobles turned to his half-brother Sigismund, King of Hungary and Croatia, who kidnapped Wenceslaus to force his abdication and pillaged Bohemian lands. The Hussite Movement, inspired by Jan Hus, is not material, but the religious and political tensions of the era form the backdrop for the game's conflict.
