Bill Farmer is an American voice actor, comedian and impressionist whose career is closely tied to Disney animation. He took over the voice of Goofy in 1987 and has also voiced Pluto and Horace Horsecollar since 1990, making him one of the studio's longest-serving character performers. Beyond those roles he has worked across dozens of animated films, television series and video games, from Space Jam and A Bug's Life to Amphibia, where he played Hop Pop Plantar from 2019 to 2022. Background
Farmer was born on November 14, 1952, in Pratt, Kansas. He started doing voices at 10, imitating Western stars such as John Wayne and Walter Brennan, and liked to order at drive-thrus in character. After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1975 he worked in radio and television, then turned to stand-up as an impressionist, playing the Comedy Corner in Dallas from 1982. A Dallas commercial agent urged him to try California, and he moved to Hollywood in 1986 while his wife stayed in Dallas and he commuted for a year. Within months he was auditioning for Goofy, studying how the original performer Pinto Colvig handled the laugh and the famous gawrsh. He won the part in January 1987.
