Founded in 1957, the club was initially named SK Gastello Ufa during the 1958 Soviet Championship season before changing to Salavat Yulaev Ufa in 1961. During the Soviet era, the team spent most of its time in lower divisions, earning promotions to the elite group for five seasons: 1978-1979, 1980-81, 1982-83, 1985-1986, and 1986-1987. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Salavat Yulaev became a founding club of the International Hockey League and later the Russian Superleague, reaching its first Russian championship semifinals in 1996-97 and winning its first Championship title in 2007-08 against Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

In the KHL era, the club marked its first year by winning two regular season titles and becoming the first club awarded the Continental Cup. The following season, they advanced to the final against Atlant and won their first Gagarin Cup. The club remained a powerful force, reaching the playoffs each year but not advancing past the conference finals in any subsequent season. In March 2022, all four Finnish players, including all-time scoring leader Teemu Hartikainen, along with Geoff Platt and Philip Larsen, left the team due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
