Katamari Damacy Codexery

Small Rock

The first lumpy bump that turns a smooth ball into a rolling catastrophe.

Small Rock is an early-tier stuck object in the Katamari Damacy franchise, one of the first categories of debris the player's katamari collects as it rolls across a level. It sits just above the tiniest pebbles and insects in the size hierarchy, representing the transition from 'barely visible speck' to 'genuinely lumpy bump' on the growing ball.

As a collectible, Small Rock carries no narrative weight of its own; its significance is mechanical and visual. It is the object that first makes the katamari look like a katamari rather than a smooth sphere, and its irregular, angular shape sticking at a jaunty tilt is one of the franchise's signature comedic images.

Lore & Background

In the cosmology of Katamari Damacy, the King scatters objects across the universe and tasks the Prince with re-collecting them on a katamari. Small Rock occupies a humble rung in that recovery: it is not a grand monument or a living creature, but a chunk of mineral that the Prince's rolling inevitably picks up. Its presence in the earliest moments of every level establishes the core loop—roll, stick, grow, repeat—before the katamari is large enough to swallow furniture, vehicles, or entire buildings.

The object's design leans into absurdity. A Small Rock does not settle neatly into the katamari's surface; it juts outward at a fixed, slightly drunken angle, as though it was glued on by a sleepy intern. Multiple Small Rocks create a crown of protruding edges that catch the next object at yet another angle, building the lopsided, asymmetrical silhouette that defines the franchise's visual identity. The comedy is cumulative: the katamari is never a clean sphere for long.

Mechanically, Small Rock belongs to the tier that unlocks once the katamari exceeds its initial sub-centimeter starting size. It is not rare, not hidden, and not tied to any easter egg; it is the bread-and-butter mass the player gathers by the dozens. Its importance is foundational—without the early rocks and pebbles, the katamari never reaches the thresholds that unlock the truly ridiculous objects later in a run.

Reader's Guide

The katamari itself is a fictional material—dense, slightly elastic, and permanently adhesive once an object makes contact. It begins at a sub-centimeter diameter and grows without upper bound within a level. Objects are grouped into rough size tiers that unlock as the katamari's total mass crosses successive thresholds.

Tier 1 (starting size, roughly 1 mm): tiny pebbles, insects, petals. The katamari is still nearly smooth.

Tier 2 (low-centimeter range): Small Rock, small flowers, coins, buttons. This is where the ball first develops visible bumps. Multiple Small Rocks stick at fixed, non-uniform angles, creating a jagged silhouette that makes the next object land at an even stranger tilt.

Tier 3 (mid-centimeter to low-decimeter): larger rocks, furniture, small vehicles. The katamari is now clearly lopsided.

Tier 4 and beyond: buildings, mountains, entire landscapes. The visual comedy peaks as skyscrapers stick at 30-degree angles.

Small Rock has no special rarity, no hidden variant, and no easter-egg trigger. It is the workhorse of early progression. The only 'flag' worth noting is that in later entries in the series, the object roster expands and some rock variants gain slightly different shapes, but the core sticking mechanic and comedic angle remain identical.
