Reception

ModNation Racers: Road Trip received mixed reviews on Metacritic. James Stephanie Sterling of Destructoid criticized its lack of content, calling it rushed and sloppily executed. Eurogamer and GamesRadar+ felt the game lacked soul, though Eurogamer liked the customization and controls, calling it a surprisingly enjoyable installment and a decent showcase for the hardware. Game Informer did not recommend the game due to the absence of online multiplayer and criticized the chaotic track design, noting that later tracks were packed with obstacles and pitfalls that caused races to devolve into chaos, compounded by poor rubberband AI; the magazine praised the touch and handheld controls. IGN disliked the load times and technical issues, reporting that the framerate drops regularly during intense action. Pocket Gamer took issue with lack of content, technical issues, and chaotic gameplay, stating the game was inferior to both the home console release and the PSP offering. GameRevolution wrote negatively, saying that good ideas were buried under bad ideas. GameSpot praised the first half of the campaign, the creation and sharing suite, and the tone, but lamented long load times, chaotic races, and no online multiplayer. G4TV gave it 3.5 out of 5, noting that none of the gripes would ruin enjoyment, but called it a huge missed opportunity for casual fans while saying the mod tools appeal to franchise converts.
