Hurricane Katrina Interview

West's unscripted 2005 remark on live TV: "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

A Concert for Hurricane Relief was an hour-long benefit concert broadcast live on NBC and its sister channels on September 2, 2005, hosted by Matt Lauer, to raise money and awareness after Hurricane Katrina. Kanye West appeared as a presenter alongside Mike Myers; after telling Myers he was going to ad-lib a little, he left the prepared script, criticised how the media portrayed black people, and ended with "George Bush doesn't care about black people".

Lore & Background

Myers, who had carried on reading the script, turned to West visibly surprised. West apologized for the comment in 2010, saying he "didn't have the grounds to call [Bush] a racist", and later said he "was programmed to think from a victimized mentality".
