Ventura was born in Samaná, Dominican Republic, in 1991 and raised in Las Terrenas. He quit school at 14, worked in construction, then joined a Royals baseball academy. He signed with the Royals as an international free agent on October 8, 2008, for a $28,000 signing bonus. He played in the minors from 2008 to 2013, including stints with the Kane County Cougars, Wilmington Blue Rocks, Northwest Arkansas Naturals, and Omaha Storm Chasers. He was named Royals' 2013 co-Minor League Player of the Year. In 2014, he won a spot in the starting rotation and pitched in the World Series. In 2015, he signed a five-year, $23 million contract, was the Opening Day starter, and was involved in several bench-clearing incidents. He finished the 2015 regular season with a 13–8 record and 4.08 ERA, and the Royals won the World Series. In 2016, he was suspended for hitting Manny Machado with a pitch. He died in a car crash on January 22, 2017, at age 25.
