Regular season
Before the 1998 regular season, Major League Baseball added the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, bringing both leagues to fifteen teams. To maintain primarily intraleague play, one club needed to move from the AL Central to the NL Central. The Royals declined, bypassing a potential full-time rivalry with the St. Louis Cardinals.
