Biography
Akaso was born in Moriguchi City, Osaka Prefecture. Due to his father's work, he lived in Wisconsin, USA, from ages one to four before his family returned to Japan and he grew up in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. His father, Haruyuki Akaso, was a professor at the Faculty of Foreign Studies (Linguistic Department) at Nagoya Gakuin University and became the university's president in April 2020; his mother is a piano teacher. He has a younger brother four years his junior studying film production at Osaka University of Arts. The surname Akaso is rare, with only about 200 people nationwide, and is said to have been bestowed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi on a swordsmith. Influenced by his academic and artistic parents, Akaso played piano from age three until junior high school. He graduated from Toho High School in Nagoya, then majored in English at the same university before dropping out to move to Tokyo. His desire to become an actor began in middle school, influenced by his family's monthly movie nights. At age 19 or 20, he went to Tokyo and auditioned for a year. The trigger to drop out of university was a call from the CEO of his current agency in 2014; he made a now-or-never decision and joined Tristone Entertainment. In 2019, he revealed on a variety show that he is allergic to approximately 52 foods, including fruit and rice.
Career
In his teens, Akaso was affiliated with the Nagoya model office FORM JAPAN and worked as a model and talent under the name Mamoru Akaso. He joined the local idol group BOYS AND MEN in Nagoya in 2010, performing on stage and appearing regularly on variety shows, but left in 2011 because he originally entered the entertainment agency to become an actor, not an idol. In 2013, he won the Grand Prix at the men's model audition of Samantha Thavasa, which led him to audition in Tokyo at age 19. He transferred to Tristone Entertainment in 2015 and began acting in television dramas and films under his current stage name.
