Decoy (Justified)

"Decoy," the 50th episode of *Justified* overall, serves as the eleventh installment of the fourth season. It aired on FX on March 12, 2013, with direction from Michael W. Watkins and a script co-written by series creator Graham Yost and producer Chris Provenzano. In this chapter, the U.S. Marshals aim to escort Drew Thompson out of Harlan, while Boyd teams up with Theo Tonin’s men to reclaim him.

The episode drew an estimated 2.45 million household viewers and a 0.9 ratings share among adults 18–49, per Nielsen. Critics universally praised it, highlighting the writing, action, tension, character work, pacing, and performances—especially those of Patton Oswalt and Mike O’Malley. Several outlets named it one of the best episodes of 2013.

The plot sees the Marshals holed up at Arlo’s house as Tonin’s hitmen search for Drew. At a bar, Nicky Augustine brutally beats Boyd for failing to deliver Drew, then Boyd strikes a new $500,000 deal to help them get close. Raylan and Rachel stay with Drew at the house, while Mullen and Tim set up a decoy convoy meant to draw attention. Tim spots three abandoned cars and suspects a trap involving bomb-rigged vehicles and snipers. Colt and a Tonin hitman track them; Tim trades insults with Colt, who orders a shot at the cars to spur movement. Tim instead circles the abandoned cars, drawing guns, and Colt alerts Boyd that the convoy is a decoy.

Raylan and Rachel take Drew to an abandoned school in Evarts. Bob, alerted to their presence, is taken hostage by hitman Yolo, who attacks him. Bob fights back, stabbing Yolo in the leg and killing him just as Raylan arrives. They regroup at the school, but Boyd deduces the location and sends hitmen. As a helicopter nears, the team prepares to fight. Raylan confronts Boyd and hitman Picker on the stairs, threatening them. Tim uses a Molotov cocktail to test the cars, causing the abandoned ones to explode. Colt tricks the hitman into handing over his rifle, then kills him. At the bar, Nicky insults Ava, and Johnny tells him to stop; Nicky then reveals Johnny’s betrayal and secret collaboration with Duffy. Ava distracts Nicky with brandy and a lighter to the face, grabbing his gun. Johnny, holding a gun on Ava, says he loves her, but lets her leave without shooting or following.
