Lore & Background

The song was written by Silk City members Mark Ronson and Diplo, alongside Dua Lipa, Diana Gordon, Romy Madley Croft, Jr Blender, Maxime Picard, Clément Picard, Jacob Olofsson, and Rami Dawod. Production was handled by Silk City with additional production from Picard Brothers, Jarami, Riton, Alex Metric, and Blender. The song took over two months to complete, beginning as a project with a Chicago house and vintage US house vibe. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine wrote and recorded a demo called "Baptize" for the track, but it did not fit, so the electricity concept was kept and rewritten with help from Croft. The demo was sent to Lipa in November 2017, who rewrote some parts and lowered the key to fit her voice. The song was recorded in March 2018 at Zelig West Studios and Lazer Sound Studios in Los Angeles.

Reader's Guide

Musically, "Electricity" is a dance-pop and piano house song drawing from Chicago house and 1990s music, with elements of disco-house, diva house, and electropop. It runs 3 minutes and 58 seconds in D minor at 118 BPM. The music video, directed by Bradley & Pablo, is set during the Northeast blackout of 2003 and features Lipa throwing a party in her loft, turning the power back on with her dance moves, while Ronson and Diplo get stuck in an elevator. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards and reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and number 62 on the US Billboard Hot 100, with platinum certifications in both countries.
