In Their Own Story

The wind dies. You stand at the base of the long white staircase, the kind that seems carved from a single piece of frozen cloud. Behind you, the desert stretches out flat and golden, and the ruins you passed an hour ago are already a smudge on the horizon. You are alone. You have been alone for a very long time.

Then: a flicker. A small point of warm light, maybe two hundred paces ahead, climbing the first few steps. You watch it. It watches you. Neither of you moves for a breath, two breaths, three. Then the light takes another step, and another, and you understand without a single word that it is waiting for you to follow.

You climb. The steps are long, your robe dragging, the air thinning. The light ahead stumbles, sways, rights itself. You reach up and press your palm against the step above you, and the light does the same, and for a moment the two of you are just two small shapes on a white wall, no bigger than a thumbprint, and the whole world is the staircase and the sky and the fact that you are not alone on it.

Halfway up, the light stops. It does not turn. It does not wave. It simply goes still, and then it is gone, and the wind picks up again, and you are climbing by yourself, and the top of the stairs is still very far away.
