American journalist and former host of CNN's Reliable Sources.
Last updated
Brian Patrick Stelter is an American journalist who served as CNN's chief media correspondent and hosted the network's Reliable Sources from 2013 to 2022. He returned to CNN in 2024 as chief media analyst. Stelter previously worked as a media reporter for The New York Times and founded the blog TVNewser.
Career
Brian Stelter started at the New York Times as a media reporter right after his 2007 college graduation, making him one of the paper's youngest hires. In late 2013, he took over as host of CNN's Reliable Sources and became a senior media correspondent for the network.
CNN canceled the show in August 2022 as part of broader cost-cutting by its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, and Stelter left after the final episode aired. He called the cancellation wrong, arguing that defending decency, democracy, and dialogue is not a partisan act.
The following month, he began a fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School focused on media and democracy. Stelter has worked as a producer on The Morning Show, a series based on his book Top of the Morning, and executive produced the documentary After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News.
In early 2023, he moderated a Davos panel on disinformation. Stelter returned to CNN in September 2024 as chief media analyst, again writing the Reliable Sources newsletter. He will appear on air and contribute online, but no longer host his own program.
