Playing career
Sallinen began his senior career with the Espoo Blues in the 2007–08 season after playing youth hockey within that organization. Though a late-round selection in the 2009 NHL draft, he chose to remain in Europe. During his fifth season with Espoo, while still trying to establish himself in the SM-liiga, he was loaned to fellow Finnish club HPK to finish the 2011–12 season. On May 2, 2012, he moved permanently to HPK on a two-year deal. In the 2012–13 season he broke out with a career-high 15 goals and 42 points in 57 games. The following season he could not replicate that offensive production and became a late-season transfer candidate, agreeing to move to Örebro HK of the Swedish Hockey League on February 21, 2014. After six games and helping Örebro avoid relegation, he signed as a free agent with Jokerit on a two-year deal on April 14, 2014. Over two seasons with Jokerit he appeared in 98 regular season KHL games and recorded 34 points. Following Jokerit's first-round playoff loss to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in 2015–16, Sallinen signed a one-year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on March 13, 2016. In the 2016–17 season he registered 10 points in 53 games with the Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. As a free agent he returned to Sweden on a two-year contract with Örebro HK on May 12, 2017. After that contract ended, he returned to Finland's Liiga, signing an optional two-year deal with HIFK on May 7, 2019. On June 18, 2021, he joined EHC Biel of the National League on a one-year deal.
