Chas Chandler
The bassist who found Jimi Hendrix in Cafe Wha? and built the Experience from scratch.
Bryan James "Chas" Chandler (18 December 1938 – 17 July 1996) was an English musician, record producer, and manager whose career reshaped rock history. Originally the bassist for The Animals, he guided the band to international fame before discovering Jimi Hendrix in a Greenwich Village nightclub. Chandler convinced the then-unknown Jimmy James to move to Britain, renaming him and forming the Jimi Hendrix Experience with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. He financed their first single "Hey Joe" without a contract. His hands-on mentorship fueled Hendrix's early success, though the iconic act of setting a guitar on fire at the Finsbury Park Astoria Theatre and Monterey Pop festival was not Chandler's idea.

Lore & Background
Chandler first saw Jimi Hendrix performing as Jimmy James at Cafe Wha?, a Greenwich Village, New York City, nightclub. Impressed by the performance, Chandler convinced him to accompany him to Britain in September 1966. With help from Michael Jeffery, Hendrix reverted to his actual name and adopted the band moniker "The Jimi Hendrix Experience." Chandler recruited bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell to complete the lineup. Before securing a recording contract, Chandler provided living accommodation for Hendrix and financed the experience's first single, "Hey Joe." He did not arrange the meeting between Hendrix and Eric Clapton; they met through others. The idea of setting a guitar on fire was not Chandler's—Hendrix had experimented with it earlier, and the Monterey act was spontaneous.
Reader's Guide
Chandler's career as a talent scout began after The Animals underwent personnel changes in 1966. He managed and produced Slade for 12 years, achieving six number one chart hits in the UK until their split in May 1981 following the failure of "Knuckle Sandwich Nancy." He also discovered Nick Van Eede while the singer worked as a Hospital Porter in a Burns Unit, signing him to Barn Records. Beyond management, Chandler expanded his industry footprint by buying and renaming IBC Studios to Portland Recording Studios at 35 Portland Place, London. He ran multiple labels including Six of the Best and Cheapskate Records, formed publishing and production companies, and produced the US group Horsepower in 1978. In the early 1990s, he helped finance Newcastle Arena, which opened in 1995.
