Plot
Teacher Shunsuke Kobayashi went to the Saeki home to check on his student, the young Toshio Saeki, who was there by himself. Up in the attic, Kobayashi discovered the dead body of Kayako Saeki. Then he got a phone call from her husband, Takeo Saeki, who admitted that he had murdered Kobayashi’s pregnant wife, Manami, and cut up her unborn child. Takeo did this because he thought Kayako had been cheating on him, after learning she had a strong, obsessive crush on Kobayashi. Kayako’s corpse rose up as an Onryō, a vengeful spirit, and killed Kobayashi. She then went after Takeo, who was on a killing spree, and finished him off as well.
Later, a woman named Kyoko helped her brother Tatsuya, a real estate agent, inspect the Saeki house so they could list it for sale. They sold the property to a couple, Yoshimi and Hiroshi Kitada. After Yoshimi started getting anonymous mail from Kayako and Toshio, she became possessed by Kayako. One day Kyoko saw the possessed Yoshimi staring at her, which made her leave and go visit her nephew Nobuyuki. He lived in the apartment that had once belonged to the Kobayashis. While there, Kyoko and Nobuyuki saw a vision of Takeo killing Manami, and the Saeki curse infected them. Tatsuya moved them to his parents’ house in the countryside. There, Kyoko seemed to be possessed, rocking back and forth while holding a baby, and Nobuyuki stopped speaking. Certain the curse from the Saeki house was to blame, Tatsuya went back to investigate. Meanwhile, Yoshimi beat her husband Hiroshi to death with a frying pan, and when Tatsuya came by, she killed him too. Eventually, all of Tatsuya’s relatives died from the curse—except for Nobuyuki.
