Plot
As a child, Dragon Eye Morrison receives electro-shock treatment for aggressive behavior, absorbing energy that lets him channel electricity. As an adult, he works as a reptile investigator and vents his rage through aggressive guitar noise. Thunderbolt Buddha, a TV repair man turned vigilante with similar powers after a childhood accident, hunts crime bosses. When they learn of each other, Thunderbolt Buddha challenges Morrison to a final showdown on Tokyo rooftops.
Release and reception
The film debuted at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2001, and also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. Variety's David Rooney called it a return to the punky kinetic anarchy of Ishii's early work. Mark Schilling of The Japan Times described it as a black comedy for hipsters that overstays its welcome. IndieWire's Edward Crouse wrote that it nails a certain sci-fi madness. Tom Mes on Midnight Eye called it a hyperkinetic descent into electro-charged punk madness. The film and its companion Gojoe were commercial failures, causing their production company Suncent CinemaWorks Inc. to go under. UK distributor Third Window Films released a Blu-ray version.
