Yuji Ohno

Japanese jazz composer known for Lupin the Third scores.

Last updated

Ohno was born into the family that founded Atami's Hotel Ohnoya.[1] The Lupin the Third anime franchise and the film The Inugami Family are among the works for which he created scores.[2][3] At his Tokyo residence on May 4, 2026, Ohno passed away from natural causes at 84 years of age.[4][5]

Life and work

Ohno began playing piano in elementary school and later taught himself jazz.[1] In 1977 Ohno was tapped to compose the score and theme songs for Lupin the 3rd Part II, and he continued composing every animated installment in the franchise.[3] He fulfilled a promise to compose for Toru Murakawa's films starting with 1978's The Most Dangerous Game, and worked on both sequels in the "Game Trilogy"[6] Together with clarinetist Isamu Akashi, a fellow student at Keio Senior High School, Ohno established the group Junior Light Music.[1]

Ohno's first time recording was in 1966, when he provided backup for Hideo Shiraki and Yūzō Kayama.[2] Starting around 1970, Ohno began writing music for TV commercials, and later moved into composing for television dramas and movies.[2] The 1976 movie The Inugami Family had its score composed by Ohno.[2] At the 2024 Tokyo Anime Award Festival, Ohno was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award.[7]
