Automatic quartz refers to watch movements that use a self-winding rotor—like those in mechanical automatics—to generate electricity, paired with a quartz crystal for timekeeping. The goal is to offer quartz accuracy without needing disposable batteries, which reduces waste and the hassle of replacements. Several brands have adopted this approach.
**How it works** Inside the watch, a rotating pendulum connects to a large gear that drives a tiny pinion. When the wearer moves, the pendulum spins the pinion at speeds up to 100,000 rpm. This motion powers a miniature generator that charges a capacitor or rechargeable battery. A full charge typically lasts between two weeks and six months.
**Seiko** Japanese company Seiko pioneered automatic quartz, first showing it at Baselworld 1986 under the trial name AGM. The first watch launched in Germany in January 1988 and in Japan that April, branded Auto-Quartz. These early models ran for 75 hours on a full charge and averaged ±15 seconds per month. The movements were initially called AGS (Automatic Generating System). In 1991, Seiko introduced the Kinetic brand name.
Today, Seiko offers many Kinetic models. The top movement is the caliber 9T82, used in the Sportura line (international) and PROSPEX (Japan-only). It sells in limited numbers for around US$3,000, making it one of the most expensive automatic quartz watches. Kinetic technology also appears in some Pulsar and Lorus watches. By 2007, Seiko had sold over eight million automatic quartz watches. Most Kinetic calibers are large and heavy—many models weigh 150 grams (about 1/3 pound) or more—so they are typically made only in men’s sizes.

Contrary to some claims, ETA's Autoquartz movements were not part of the 'Flatline series' (which refers to ultra-thin mechanical movements), and the often-cited 53-jewel count for the ETA 206.211 is unsubstantiated. Also, while Ventura's VEN_99 movement combined autoquartz with a digital LCD display, it was not the only such watch—Seiko's Kinetic Digital (e.g., caliber 5M42) predated it in the 1990s.
