The Pretty Cure All Stars series began in 2009 with Pretty Cure All Stars DX: Everyone's Friends - the Collection of Miracles, which featured Cures from Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart, Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star, Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!, and Fresh Pretty Cure!. Subsequent films in the DX trilogy added Cures from HeartCatch PreCure! and Suite PreCure. The New Stage trilogy followed from 2012 to 2014, introducing a movie-exclusive Cure named Cure Echo and celebrating the franchise's 10th anniversary.

From 2017's Dream Stars onward, the films shifted to a smaller crossover format, featuring Cures from only the current series and the two preceding series. However, the 2023 film Pretty Cure All Stars F returned to the original format by including all 77 main Cures. A recurring gag in the opening scenes involves the most recent Pretty Cure team accidentally bumping into older teams, and the fairies of different teams are depicted as friends.

The Pretty Cure All Stars series serves as an annual crossover event that connects the evolving Pretty Cure franchise, allowing fans to see characters from different series interact. The films are generally released shortly after the premiere of a new Pretty Cure television series, with the newest team having the largest role in the plot. A notable feature of most films is the use of Miracle Lights—small flashlights handed to audience members—which viewers wave during the finale to support the Cures. The exception is Pretty Cure All Stars: Singing with Everyone Miraculous Magic!, which is a musical and does not use Miracle Lights. The series has also inspired video games, such as PreCure All Stars: All Together☆Let's Dance! for the Wii. The films have been released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and some have aired on television. The series marks key franchise milestones, including the 10th anniversary in 2014 and the 15th anniversary in 2018.
