Nemuri Kyōshirō

Nemuri Kyōshirō is a masterless swordsman active during the reigns of Tokugawa Ienari and Tokugawa Ieyoshi. He is the son of a Japanese mother, the daughter of a hatamoto who commits jigai after his birth, and a foreign father. His conception during a Black Mass leads to his deep hatred of what he views as Christian hypocrisy. The novels were written by Renzaburō Shibata and originally serialized beginning in May 1956 in the Shūkan Shinchō.

Reader's Guide

The Nemuri Kyōshirō series comprises seven full-length novels and eight short stories published in Japan. The character has been adapted into numerous films, television series, stage plays, and a manga. Notable film portrayals include Kōji Tsuruta (1956–1958), Ichikawa Raizō (1963–1969), and Matsukata Hiroki (1969). The Ichikawa Raizō films were released in the United States under the title Sleepy Eyes of Death. The character also appeared in television series starring Masakazu Tamura (1972–1973) and Kataoka Takao (1982–1983), as well as a 2026 NHK TV movie starring Hiroki Hasegawa. A manga adaptation by Yoshihiro Yanagawa was serialized from 2001 to 2003. In 2009, singer-songwriter Gackt was announced to star in a stage play beginning in May 2010.
