In Ian Fleming's six novels, Felix Leiter is introduced in Casino Royale as a former U.S. Marine working with NATO's Joint Intelligence Staff, described physically as tall and thin with straw-colored hair that gave him a deceptively boyish look. He acts as Bond's savior in that first novel, providing 32 million francs to cover losses against SMERSH paymaster Le Chiffre. In Live and Let Die, the character suffers a brutal shark attack orchestrated by Mr. Big; although Fleming initially intended for Leiter to die, agent Naomi Burton protested, resulting in his survival with a hook for a hand and a prosthetic leg.
