After ignoring orders to hack Chinese government files, M sacrificed him to secure the release of six captured agents and ensure a peaceful handover. Taken prisoner by China, he endured five months of torture before attempting suicide with a cyanide capsule hidden in a fake tooth. He survived but was left with a misshapen jaw, broken teeth, and a sunken left eye socket. Escaping custody, he reinvented himself as Raoul Silva, a cyberterrorist for hire. His plan centered on targeting the agency he once served, specifically aiming to destroy M's reputation and life, turning his personal trauma into a weapon against British Intelligence.

In Their Own Story

Silva's campaign began when his henchman Patrice stole an MI6 hard drive containing undercover agent details, which Silva then uploaded to YouTube, leading to several murders. He escalated the conflict by sabotaging a gas main at MI6 headquarters, causing an explosion that killed multiple agents. Bond was sent to Shanghai to eliminate him but instead captured Silva's lover, Sévérine. In a chilling game of William Tell, Silva forced Bond to shoot at a glass on Sévérine's head; after Bond missed, Silva executed her. Although Royal Navy helicopters arrived to take Silva into custody, he had anticipated this. Q inadvertently gave Silva access to MI6 systems during decryption, allowing him to escape his own capture. Silva detonated an explosive charge in the London Underground to kill Bond and later burst into a government inquiry to assassinate M, injuring Gareth Mallory instead.
