Fortified Zone 2
A Game Boy sequel with improved graphics but slow movement.
Jaleco developed and published Fortified Zone 2, a 1992 top-down shooter for the Game Boy. A direct sequel to Fortified Zone (1991), it follows the two mercenaries, Masato Kanzaki and Mizuki Makimura, on a new mission to take down a new weapon that their enemies have. Originally a Japan-only release, Broke Studio brought an English version out in 2025. Critics praised the graphics but noted slow movement and little innovation from the first game.

Release and reception
Fortified Zone 2 was released in Japan for the Game Boy on February 21, 1992, and re-released digitally for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console on January 11, 2012. Initially never released outside Japan, it was published in the West on June 3, 2025, by the French studio Broke Studio, marking the first commercial European release with an English translation and enhancements. Contemporary reviews were mixed: Michael Paul of Video Games found the game solid, while a Famitsu reviewer said there was nothing particularly poor or special about it. Olivier Prezeau of Joypad expected more from a sequel due to few major differences from the original. Famitsu reviewers noted that characters and enemies moved too slowly, and that the game lacked varied enemies and gameplay mechanics, making levels monotonous. Prezeau wrote that the game did not grab his attention, suggesting two-player mode for engagement. Knut Gollert of Power Play said detailed graphics and puzzles made the game fun despite tired concepts. Famitsu and Joypad praised the graphics, with Prezeau noting improvement over the original.
