Guerino Bertocchi
Italian mechanic and test driver for Maserati and Fangio.
Guerino Bertocchi, born October 29, 1907, in Budrio, Italy, and passing on April 13, 1981, spent his entire career tied to Maserati as a mechanic and occasional driver. He started at the Maserati factory and first worked as a mechanic and co-driver with Alfieri Maserati at the 1926 Targa Florio. By 1947, he became the chief mechanic and test driver for Maserati’s Formula One team, also testing road models like the 5000 GT. Juan Manuel Fangio relied on Bertocchi to test cars before he would drive them. Bertocchi’s sole Formula One entry was as a reserve driver for the 1954 Spanish Grand Prix, but since all Maserati drivers started, he never raced in F1 again.
