Production
After completing the war film La colomba non deve volare, Sergio Garrone turned to horror. Through distributor Sabatini, he met Turkish producer Şakir V. Sözen, who offered a villa location and suggested casting Ayhan Işık. Sözen proposed making two films in eight weeks instead of one in six, leading to both Le amanti del mostro and The Hand That Feeds the Dead. Garrone described the concept as a variation on a Frankenstein story. Filming took place in Istanbul and at Elios Studios in Rome. Carlo Rambaldi provided the special effects for the surgical scenes.
