Making and release

In the original Italian version the hero was Maciste, not Hercules.[2] The French title was Maciste contre les hommes de pierre.[3] English distributors renamed the hero Hercules because Maciste was unknown to American audiences.[3] Mythological components from Roman, Greek, Ancient Egyptian, and Cretan sources are combined in the film.[2]

Italy saw the film's debut on 27 June 1964.[4] Maciste e la regina di Samar* is the film's original Italian title.[3]

What the cited sources add

Film historian Gary Allen Smith described the film as a combination of peplum and science fiction.[5] Smith noted that the sequences in the Moon Men's mountain kingdom are filmed in sepia tone.[5] The film was shown on Mystery Science Theater 3000, becoming infamous for its "Deep Hurting" sandstorm sequence.[6] For more than five minutes of screen time, cast members wander aimlessly in a sandstorm, with no advancement of the plot.[6]

Following the "Rock Climbing" segment from an earlier movie, Dr. Forrester introduced the "Deep Hurting" concept.[6]
