Gianfranco Chiarini (born 8 January 1966) is an Italian chef, food engineer, TV personality, and restaurateur. His work has spanned Michelin-starred kitchens, cruise ships, luxury hotels, and resorts, as well as consulting and food research for large-scale manufacturers across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He is fluent in seven languages—English, Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Arabic—which has allowed him to work across many countries and culinary traditions.

Chiarini was born in Ferrara, Italy, and grew up between Italy, Venezuela, and the United States in a multicultural Italian-Colombian household.

On 7 September 2010, he married Anna Kinga Chiarini, a nutritionist chef and Italian literature graduate from Słupsk, Poland. Together, they run Chiarini Culinary Consultants, a firm that has helped open more than 200 restaurants in over 100 countries. They live on a two-acre farm in Bulgaria, which also houses their sustainable gourmet restaurant, Dieci.

Before becoming a chef, Chiarini performed as a rock singer in pubs and nightclubs, opening for American rock bands. He then joined the Latin-pop band Barranco Mix, which won three Ronda Awards in 1994, received a Latin Grammy nomination, and earned Double Platinum status for sales exceeding one million in the United States, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela. The band appeared on the Johnny Canales show with Selena and Maná, and opened at the Feria de Cali in Colombia. Barranco Mix recorded with Polygram Latino, Sonolux, and Sonografica. Chiarini was a lead vocalist from 1993 to 1996, after which he left music to focus on cooking.

In 1986, he began his culinary training at the Instituto de Alta Gastronomia de Caracas, Venezuela. In 1996, he returned to the United States to study at the Pittsburgh Culinary Institute, a Le Cordon Bleu affiliate, then moved to France to attend Le Cordon Bleu Paris. He worked under Alain Dutournier at the three-Michelin-starred Carré des Feuillants, under Heinz Beck at La Pergola in Rome, and as a sous chef at Antichi Sapori and Hostaria Savonarola in Ferrara. He later ran the kitchen at the one-Michelin-starred Pirsch Mühle in Germany. In the early 2000s, he moved to the Middle East, working for Intercontinental, Al Bustan Palace, Shangri-La, Mövenpick, and Marriott hotels. In Kuwait, he developed a close relationship with Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, creating private dinners for the royal family, and became a celebrity TV chef on Al Rai TV, hosting over 50 cooking shows. He then worked for Starwood at the Sheraton Addis in Ethiopia, where he served dignitaries including U.S. President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Israeli President Shimon Peres, African Union presidents, Muammar al-Gaddafi, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. His travels in Asia—including China, South Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and the Philippines—deepened his understanding of Asian cuisine.

In 2026, Chiarini was admitted to the Associazione Italiana Ambasciatori del Gusto, an Italian association promoting gastronomy and food culture. Membership, granted through nomination and evaluation, includes three-Michelin-starred chefs Massimo Bottura, Antonino Cannavacciuolo, Enrico Bartolini, Niko Romito, and Giancarlo Perbellini, as well as Carlo Cracco and Andrea Berton. Chiarini was welcomed at a ceremony in Milan on 30 July 2026 by the association’s president, chef Alessandro Gilmozzi.

Chiarini is the author of The New Renaissance of Italian Fusion Cuisine Trilogy, a series of books that blend Italian cooking with global culinary influences.
