Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna, was a leading philosopher and physician during the Islamic Golden Age. He worked for several Iranian rulers and later shaped medieval European medicine and Scholastic philosophy. Many regard him as a founder of early modern medicine.
His most important works are *The Book of Healing*, a wide-ranging scientific and philosophical encyclopedia, and *The Canon of Medicine*, which became a standard textbook at European universities and was still in use as late as 1650. Beyond medicine and philosophy, he wrote on astronomy, alchemy, geography, geology, psychology, Islamic theology, logic, mathematics, physics, and poetry. His philosophy followed the Peripatetic school, rooted in Aristotelian thought, and he is seen as one of its greatest Muslim exponents.
He wrote mostly in Arabic but also produced key works in Persian, and his poetry appears in both languages. Of the roughly 450 works attributed to him, about 240 survive—150 on philosophy and 40 on medicine. The name Avicenna is a Latinized form of the Arabic patronym *ibn Sīnā*, meaning a descendant of a man named Sina—specifically, his great-great-grandfather. His full formal Arabic name is Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥusayn bin ʿAbdallāh bin al-Ḥasan bin ʿAlī bin Sīnā al-Balkhī al-Bukhārī.
He lived during the Islamic Golden Age, when scholars studied translations of Byzantine, Greco-Roman, Persian, and Indian texts. Islamic intellectuals expanded on these works, especially those from the Kindi school, and also built on Persian and Indian advances in mathematics, astronomy, algebra, trigonometry, and medicine. The Samanid Empire in eastern Persia, Greater Khorasan, and Central Asia, along with the Buyid dynasty in western Persia and Iraq, fostered this scholarly environment. Under the Samanids, Bukhara rivaled Baghdad as a cultural hub. Avicenna used the great libraries of Balkh, Khwarazm, Gorgan, Rey, Isfahan, and Hamadan.
He debated philosophy with leading scholars of his time, as shown in texts like the 'Ahd with Bahmanyar. Nizami Aruzi recorded that before leaving Khwarazm, Avicenna met the scientist and astronomer al-Biruni, the mathematician Abu Nasr Mansur, the philosopher Abu Sahl 'Isa ibn Yahya al-Masihi, and the physician ibn al-Khammar. Study of the Quran and Hadith flourished, and Islamic philosophy, jurisprudence (fiqh), and speculative theology (kalam) were further developed by Avicenna and his contemporaries.
Avicenna was born around 980 in the village of Afshana in Transoxiana to a Persian family. The village was near Bukhara, his mother’s hometown. His father, Abd Allah, was from Balkh in Bactria and served as a Samanid official, governing a village in the royal estate of Harmaytan under Nuh II. Avicenna had a younger brother. The family later moved to Bukhara, a learning center, where his education began under his father. Though his father and brother converted to Isma'ilism, Avicenna remained a Hanafi Sunni, like the Samanids. Recognizing his brilliance, his parents hired tutors in Arabic and Islamic knowledge. He memorized the Quran by age 10, then studied arithmetic with an Indian greengrocer and fiqh with the Hanafi jurist Ismail al-Zahid. Later, the physician and philosopher al-Natili tutored him in Porphyry’s *Isagoge* and possibly Aristotle’s *Categories*. After reading Ptolemy’s *Almagest* and Euclid’s *Elements*, al-Natili encouraged him to study independently. By 18, he was well-versed in Greek sciences. Though his autobiography names only al-Natili as a teacher, he likely also learned from the physicians Qumri and Abu Sahl 'Isa ibn Yahya al-Masihi.
At 17, Avicenna became a physician to Nuh II. After his father died, when Avicenna was at least 21, he took an administrative post, possibly as governor of Harmaytan. He later moved to Gurganj, the capital of Khwarazm, citing “necessity” as his reason.
