Picture This, a pop rock band from Athy, County Kildare, is made up of Ryan Hennessy, Jimmy Rainsford, Owen Cardiff, and Cliff Deane. Their first album, named after the group, hit number one on the Irish Albums Chart in 2017. They followed with Mdrn Lv in 2019, Life in Colour in 2021, and their fourth album, Parked Car Conversations, in April 2024.
History
In October 2015, Ryan Hennessy used his iPhone to record a sample of "Take My Hand," which he and Jimmy Rainsford later took into the studio to record properly. The resulting video, posted to Facebook and YouTube, has since racked up over 4 million views across both platforms. For their very first live show, the band booked Dublin's Grand Social, but tickets sold out in under half an hour. They moved the gig to The Academy, which holds 850 people, making Picture This the first act ever to sell out that venue for a debut performance.
In spring 2016, they announced a 20-date Irish tour, kicking off in Leixlip on 4 June and wrapping up with three nights at the Olympia in Dublin (a 1,600-capacity venue) from 1 to 3 November. By 22 July 2016, 16 of those shows had sold out, including two Olympia dates, prompting the band to add a third and final Olympia show on 3 November. That July, they also revealed their debut self-titled EP, set for release on 12 August, featuring five original tracks including "Take My Hand." The EP hit number 1 on the Irish Albums Chart for the week ending 18 August 2016. In May 2017, Picture This dropped "Never Change," the lead single from their first studio album.
Rainsford told Billboard the track was about "the feeling of loving somebody exactly how they are and never wanting them to change a thing," adding that the video shows the band can go anywhere but always return home, and they'll never change that. Their self-titled debut album arrived on 25 August 2017 and topped the IRMA charts in Ireland. On 23 March 2018, they released "This Morning," followed by "When We Were Young" on 15 June.
2018–present: Mdrn Lv and Life in Colour
On 17 October 2018, they announced their second album, Mdrn Lv, along with its lead single "One Drink," and a second headline tour. On 7 December 2018, they put out the second single from that album, "Everything or Nothing." Mdrn Lv came out on 19 February 2019, celebrated with a performance on top of the Empire State Building in New York City. On 18 October 2019, they released the single "One Night," and the next day announced three Irish concert dates in Cork, Dublin, and Belfast for June 2020. In June 2021, the band released their third studio album, Life in Colour, which includes the single "LA House Party." That album debuted at number 2 on the Irish Albums Chart.
