Scale and criminals
Stone built a 22-category scale of evil after studying hundreds of killers, their methods, and motives. Category 1 includes those who kill in self-defense, while Category 22 covers serial torturer-murderers. He first outlined these categories in his 2009 book The Anatomy of Evil, then detailed them further in The New Evil: Understanding the Emergence of Modern Violent Crime (2019), co-written with clinical psychologist Gary Brucato. The show interviews neurologists, psychologists, and forensic psychiatrists to explore killers' minds. It uses partial re-enactments, news footage, evidence, and local reports. Neurological, environmental, and genetic factors are examined, along with background history and premeditation, to place individuals on the scale.
