Cestoda is a class of parasitic worms within the flatworm phylum Platyhelminthes. The best-known members are the tapeworms of the subclass Eucestoda, which are ribbon-like adults that live in the digestive tracts of vertebrate hosts. All cestodes are parasitic, and many have complex life cycles involving a definitive host and one or more intermediate hosts. The subclass Eucestoda includes species whose adult bodies consist of a scolex, or head, a short neck, and a strobila—a segmented trunk made up of proglottids. These proglottids are essentially packages of eggs that are regularly shed into the environment, either passively in the host’s feces or through active movement, to infect other organisms. The scolex typically bears hooks, suckers, or both, allowing the worm to anchor itself to the intestinal wall. Cestodes have no mouth or gut; they absorb nutrients directly from the host’s alimentary tract through a specialized tegument, which also facilitates gas exchange and protects against digestive enzymes. All tapeworms are hermaphrodites, each individual possessing both male and female reproductive organs. The neck continually produces new proglottids, each containing a reproductive tract, and mature proglottids become filled with eggs before detaching. The other subclass, Cestodaria, consists of species that mainly infect fish and are wormlike but not divided into proglottids; they have ten larval hooks, whereas Eucestoda have six. Around six thousand cestode species have been described, and it is probable that all vertebrates can host at least one species. Some cestodes are highly host-specific, while others parasitize a wide variety of hosts. Humans can become infected by several species through eating undercooked meat—such as pork carrying *Taenia solium*, beef with *T. saginata*, or fish with *Diphyllobothrium*—or through poor hygiene involving *Hymenolepis* or *Echinococcus* species. The unsubstantiated idea of using tapeworms for weight loss has been promoted since around 1900.

The largest species, the whale tapeworm *Tetragonoporus calyptocephalus*, can exceed 30 meters, while those parasitizing small hosts like voles or shrews range from just 0.8 to 240 millimeters. All six thousand described species are parasitic, with definitive hosts being vertebrates (terrestrial and marine) and intermediate hosts including insects, crustaceans, mollusks, annelids, and other vertebrates. Humans can be infected by species such as *Taenia solium* (from undercooked pork), *T. saginata* (beef), or *Diphyllobothrium* (fish), as well as *Hymenolepis* or *Echinococcus* under poor hygiene conditions.
