Fernanda Montenegro is the stage name of Arlette Pinheiro Monteiro Torres (née Esteves da Silva), a Brazilian actress born on 16 October 1929. She is widely regarded as the greatest Brazilian actress of all time and often called the grande dame of Brazilian theater, cinema, and performing arts. She became the first Brazilian and first Latin American nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, for her role in Central Station (1998), and the first actress nominated for an Academy Award for a performance in a Portuguese-language film.

Fernanda Montenegro began her artistic life in the theatre with the play Alegres Canções nas Montanhas in 1950. In 1951 she became a TV pioneer in Brazil, working for Rio de Janeiro's TV Tupi, the second TV station in South America. She was the first actress hired by TV Tupi, where she starred in teletheater shows. She made her telenovela debut in 1954 with A Muralha on TV Excelsior. Throughout her career she worked for most of Brazil's main broadcasters, including Band, TV Cultura, RecordTV, and TV Globo (where she has remained since 1981), as well as defunct stations TV Excelsior, TV Rio, and TV Tupi.
