Jaime Ramón Mercader del Río was born on 7 February 1913 in Argentona, Catalonia, Spain, to Eustacia María Caridad del Río Hernández and Pablo Mercader Marina. He was raised in France by his mother, a communist who fought in the Spanish Civil War and served in the Soviet international underground. In the mid-1930s, Mercader became a communist and worked for leftist organizations during the Second Spanish Republic. He was imprisoned for political activities but freed when the Popular Front was elected in 1936. During the civil war, he was recruited by NKVD officer Nahum Eitingon and sent for secret agent training in the USSR. Mercader befriended and infiltrated the Trotskyist communist faction during the Spanish Civil War, and as an NKVD agent, he met war correspondent David Crook, teaching him Spanish and espionage techniques.

In 1938, while a student at the University of Paris, Mercader befriended Sylvia Ageloff, a confidante of Trotsky, using the identity Jacques Mornard. He later joined her in Brooklyn under the Canadian identity Frank Jacson, facilitated by the passport of a dead Canadian volunteer. In October 1939, Mercader moved to Mexico City and persuaded Ageloff to join him. Through her access to Trotsky's house in Coyoacán, Mercader posed as a sympathizer, befriended guards, and made drawings of the villa. On 20 August 1940, alone with Trotsky in his study, Mercader struck him from behind with an ice axe. Trotsky died the next day from brain injuries. Mercader was beaten by guards and turned over to Mexican authorities. He refused to acknowledge his true identity, claiming to be Jacques Mornard, and was convicted of murder in 1943, sentenced to 20 years in prison.
