Plot

Jai Puri works as a forest ranger in Alberta, Canada, and possesses a strange talent: he can step into a photograph and relive the moment from someone else's perspective. When his father Jatin dies in a boating accident, a former detective named Habibullah Pasha, nicknamed Happi, approaches Jai. Happi explains that Jatin had helped him many times, so he wants to find the killer. Jai first thinks his father simply had a heart attack, but he decides to use his ability on an 8x10 photo taken by his mother Savitri. The picture shows Jatin, his brother Sunder, his lawyer Anil, and his surrogate son Adit on the boat. Entering the photo from Jatin's point of view, Jai watches his father fall to his death. Because he stays inside the photograph for more than sixty seconds, he ends up in the hospital. He begins to suspect Sunder, who saw Jatin fall, and gives chase, but Sunder gets away. Happi theorizes that someone slipped Jatin extra beta blockers, since he already had two heart attacks, and the cold water triggered the fatal one. Jai goes back into the photo, this time from Sunder's perspective, and sees Sunder mixing pills into Jatin's drink. This lands Jai back in the hospital, where he confesses everything to Sheila, including his powers. They break into Sunder's home and discover his strangled body. Soon, a black SUV chases Jai and Sheila, trying to run them down. Jai pursues the vehicle on foot, but the driver escapes.

Production

In March 2008, the cast and crew filmed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with some parts shot in the Western Cape of South Africa. Initial delays due to visa and luggage problems increased the film's budget beyond expectations. Further delays arose from a dispute between producers-distributors and exhibitors over revenue-sharing terms and the IPL. The Guild had decided not to release new films after 3 April, but at Percept Picture Company's request, the strike began after 4 April, allowing the film's 3 April release. Close to release, rumors spread that the film would be stalled due to bounced cheques of Rs 66.7 million from PPC to T-Series, but PPC CEO Navin Shah confirmed a demand draft had been given to the music partners and the release would proceed on schedule.

Music

Salim–Sulaiman handled the music for this film, with lyrics contributed by Neeraj Sridhar, Sameer, and Irfan Siddiqui. American rapper Bohemia wrote, produced, and performed the title track for Akshay Kumar. The soundtrack earned a lukewarm response; critic Joginder Tuteja gave it two stars, highlighting "Nazaara Hai" as the best track and noting the solo rap "I Got The Picture" as an interesting listen.

Release

The film was expected to draw audiences due to a public holiday on 3 April, but opened to a low 30%–40% start at major multiplexes across the country. It faced stiff competition from Fast & Furious at the box office. Filmmakers attributed the disappointing run to the lack of a blockbuster soundtrack and less targeted promotion. Vivek Agnihotri commented that the film failed to exploit Akshay Kumar's brand promise of pure entertainment, annoying viewers and wasting an opportunity, and that no one understood the film's genre. 8 x 10 Tasveer grossed worldwide and was a disaster, though Akshay Kumar stated it was one of his favorite films. Critics panned the film; Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave it 1.5 out of 5, saying it went horribly wrong in the final 20–25 minutes. Rajeev Masand of CNN IBN rated it 1/5, Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India gave it 2/5, and Sashi Baliga of Hindustan Times also rated it 2/5.
