Plot
Raja and Vinoth, college students in the same class, hate each other after a fight during a cricket match. Vinoth is rough but a talented drawer, while Raja is soft and simple. Both fall under the spell of their classmate Nila and befriend her. Raja changes his habits and stops playing cricket for her. During a college trip to Kodaikanal, Raja cares for the sick Nila. Vinoth reveals his love to Nila, but she chooses Raja. Vinoth becomes a drunkard. After a serious bike accident, Nila is hospitalized. Raja discovers he is now a ghost and died in the accident. He meets Chellappa, another ghost, who explains that a ghost can be seen only if it wishes. Nila becomes sad and depressive, attempting suicide but being saved. Raja visits Vinoth's house, sees paintings of Nila, and decides to help Vinoth win her heart. Vinoth initially flees from Raja but later accepts advice. Vinoth changes his character and spends time with Nila. He proposes marriage, but she refuses, saying she has no feelings for him and he behaves like her deceased boyfriend. Angry, Vinoth reveals Raja is a ghost. Raja appears and urges Nila to move on, but she refuses. Vinoth pushes Nila onto railway tracks, and she dies after being hit by a train. Vinoth explains to Nila, now a ghost, that he wanted her happiness. The film ends with Raja and Nila walking hand in hand.
Production
R. Viswanathan produced this film under his Bharathan Films banner, marking M. P. S. Sivakumar's first directorial effort. The lead roles went to London Ravi and Viswanathan's son R. V. Bharathan, while Miss Gujarat Meghna took on the female lead. Manivannan was cast in a key part, with Karunas, Manobala, Vennira Aadai Moorthy, and Muthukalai handling the comedy. Dhina composed the music, and actor Silambarasan sang a kuthu track. The climax was filmed at the same train accident location used in Kamal Haasan's Anbe Sivam, with a train rented for three days.
Reception
A reviewer from tamiloviam.com compared the film to Kadhal Desam (1996) and Japanil Kalyanaraman (1985), concluding that more focus on story and screenplay could have made it innovative. Malini Mannath of Chennai Online wrote that the director tried to give a different dimension to a love triangle, but the narration is jerky and the second half lags. Lajjavathi of Kalki noted the concept reminded her of serial Kaathu Karuppu and Anbe Aaruyire, but found it entertaining and praised the director for narrating a different kind of ghost story.
