Mallick Brothers

Dhrupad duo from the Darbhanga gharana, 13th generation musicians.

Last updated

The Mallick Brothers, Pandit Prashant Mallick and Pandit Nishant Mallick, are Indian classical musicians from the Darbhanga gharana of the Dhrupad tradition, one of the oldest genres of Hindustani vocal music. Sons of Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick, they belong to the 13th generation of the Darbhanga Gharana and are considered powerful exponents of Dhrupad both nationally and internationally. In 2013-2014, they were honoured by the Sangeet Natak Akademi with the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar.

Background

The Mallick Brothers carry forward a legacy that stretches back 13 generations within the Darbhanga Gharana. They were trained under their father Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick and their grandfather, the late Pandit Vidur Mallick. Their family tree includes the legendary Padma Shri Pandit Ram Chatur Mallick, who created the aura of the Gauharbani and Khandarbani styles.

The duo are known for their soulful voices with depth, and they elaborate the four stages of Alaap and rhythmic improvisation (Layakari) in different meters (Laya). A prime characteristic of their singing is the smooth glide from one note to another, called meend and soot. They have introduced a new repertoire of bandishes in the Darbhanga Gharana, singing poetic renditions of ancient poets like Kabir Das to modern poets like Ashok Jamnani.
