HAL HF-24 Marut

The HAL HF-24 Marut ("Spirit of the Tempest") is an Indian jet fighter aircraft developed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) during the 1960s and early 70s. Designed by German aeronautical engineer Kurt Tank, with Project Engineer George William Benjamin, it was the first Indian-developed jet fighter. The Marut conducted its maiden flight on 24 June 1961, and the first production aircraft was delivered to the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 1 April 1967. Although envisioned as a supersonic interceptor, it never exceeded Mach 1 due to engine limitations stemming from political and economic factors.

During the 1950s, HAL sought to expand into supersonic fighter development, and the Indian government authorized the project under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to foster a modern aircraft industry. The design phase emphasized a twin-engine configuration and a target speed of Mach 1.4 to 1.5. A full-scale wooden glider, the HAL X-241, flew on 3 April 1959 as a flying demonstrator, conducting 86 flights before a landing incident damaged it. The first powered prototype flew on 24 June 1961, using the same Orpheus 703 engines as the Folland Gnat, which were adequate for testing but insufficient for supersonic flight.
