Plot
Jai leaves his pregnant wife Lekha in a town while he searches for her parents in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Lekha struggles alone to give birth, calling out for help but too weak to be heard. Rumors spread that she died in labor and now haunts the house as a powerful ghost, with villagers hearing her sing lullabies to her baby. When Jai and his friends return at night, they find the town silent. Jai introduces Lekha to them, and the friends stay overnight. The next day, the men are shunned at the market, and a drunk villager tries to warn Jai but is silenced. Ajith later sees the house dilapidated, a baby cot rocking by itself, and Lekha extending her arm unnaturally to retrieve an apple. Mani discovers a decomposed corpse behind the house wearing a ring identical to Lekha's. The drunk villager is found drowned. Jai dismisses their warnings, ends the friendship, and expels them.
Production
Directed by debutant Jawahar, the film was shot entirely in late 2015 in interiors of Kerala, Chennai, and Nagercoil. It featured Reshmi Menon as a mother, with Rajendran and Kovai Sarala also signed on. After a period of inactivity, the producers promoted the film in August 2016 using the hashtag "PeisNext" on Twitter, then re-revealed the title as Bayama Irukku. Following another year of little promotion, the film was readied for a September 2017 theatrical release, with Bharani featured in posters after his popularity from the Tamil reality show Bigg Boss.
Reception
A critic from The Times of India wrote that the film is short on both scares and laughs, with a predictable script lacking inventiveness. Sify.com stated there was not even a single interesting scene, and the film neither frightens nor evokes laughter. The New Indian Express similarly noted that Bayama Irukku does not fall under either horror or comedy, as it fails at both scaring and amusing the audience.
