Kiranmala (TV series)

Kiranmala is a Bengali-language Indian television series that originally ran on Star Jalsha from August 4, 2014, to November 19, 2016. Surinder Films produced the show, with Rooqma Ray, Farhan Imroze, and Chandrayee Ghosh in leading roles. The story draws from traditional folktales of the same name, which were compiled in Dakshinaranjan Mitra Majumder’s *Thakurmar Jhuli*. The series was later dubbed into Hindi, Tamil, and Odia, airing on Star Plus, Star Vijay, and Tarang TV respectively. It returned for a rerun in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aired a third time on Jalsha Movies on May 13, 2024, and a fourth time on Colors Bangla on June 28, 2026.

The plot follows King Bijoy of Achinpur. After a battle, his mother, the Rajmata, reveals a secret room where demons were imprisoned by his father, and tells him of a prophecy: a princess named Kiranmala will be born in their family to save the world from demons. The demon queen Paykati and her daughter Katkati learn of this and plot against the royal family. Paykati disguises herself as a nurse for Queen Rupmoti and, during labor, swaps baby Kiranmala with frogs and rats. She throws the infant into the sea, but a fisherman and his wife rescue and raise her alongside their sons. Paykati then accuses Rupmoti of witchcraft, and the king and Rajmata believe her, banishing Rupmoti from the palace. Eighteen years later, the demons assemble a team including Pishachini, Bajramala, Donkar, and Bitkel. Kiranmala falls in love with Donkar’s stepbrother, Kumar Prithviraj, making Donkar jealous. Bajramala also loves Prithviraj and becomes jealous of Kiranmala. Despite this, Kiranmala and Prithviraj marry and have a daughter, Alokmala, whose presence turns the jealousy of Bajramala and Donkar into love. Angered, Katkati tries to destroy Achinpur and Amrita Nagari. Kiranmala sacrifices herself by suicide to save the world. She and Katkati both go to Mokhsa, the Kingdom of Death, where Kiranmala is rewarded with Svarga, while Katkati, Pyakati, Pishachini, and Bitkel suffer in Naraka. Later, Alokmala retrieves Kiranmala and brings her back.

The main cast includes Rukma Roy as Rajkumari Kiranmala, Urmimala, and Jhinukmala (a triple role), Farhan Imroze as Rajkumar Prithviraj/Kumar, and Chandrayee Ghosh as Rakkoshi Rani Katkati/Kotimaa.
