Making and release
The Times of India reported on 8 March 2014 that Radhika Kumaraswamy’s Avatharam was ready to hit screens.[3] The film was released to mixed-to-positive reviews.[4] Another review stated that within twenty odd minutes of screening you realize something has gone wrong in this film.[5] The review added that everything goes wrong from its middling screenplay to a tawdry treatment.[5]
The background music by Chinna was cited as the sole technical exception.[5] The film’s main drawback was described as weak characterization of the god and the evil.[5] Compared to Kodi Ramakrishna’s earlier fantasy films such as Ammoru, Devi and Devvulu, this film was called the weakest among all.[5] The same reviewer noted that although the character occasionally seems slurred, she possesses a backbone, which provides the actress with considerable scope to do more than just look attractive.[5]
What the cited sources add
The Times of India article from 8 March 2014 confirms the film was ready for release but provides no further production details.[3] The Times of India article from 20 April 2014 notes the film was appreciated but gives no specific critical analysis.[6] The indiaherald.com review states that Kodi Ramakrishna is one of the top directors able to control high end graphics in his films.[5] That review also notes the film’s cinematography is okay and never tries to lift the soul of the film.[5]
The same source reports that editing could have been crispier as the second half drags around twenty minutes.[5] The review concludes that the director succeeded in showcasing spirituality in the beginning but failed to elevate the mood afterwards.[5]
