Cosmic Break
Anime-style MMO shooter with customizable robots and three warring Unions.
Cosmic Break is a free-to-play 3D MMO third-person shooter developed and published by the Japanese company CyberStep, Inc. It features big robots and colorful, explosive battles in an anime style, with various NPCs and playable characters voiced by famous Japanese voice-over artists. The game was officially released in several countries and later had a sequel, Cosmic League (also known as Cosmic Break 2), which was released in the summer of 2015. Both games eventually shut down service in the U.S., but a more widely released version, CosmicBreak Universal, was made live on Steam in the US in 2021.

Lore & Background
The game is set in the distant future in a parallel dimension called the Cosmic Ark. A race of long-dormant, gigantic robots called Arks have suddenly awakened to find their galaxy being ruled by the evil Chaos. The three remaining great Arks of Wisdom, Courage and Strength have been drained of energy, with only enough remaining to revive one to vanquish Chaos. Three Unions—Bladine, Wizdom, and Dostrex—have formed, each competing for the revival of their respective Ark and the fate of the world. Beyond this overarching story, there are several character backstories, such as those of Crimrose and Ivis, Eihwaz, and the meeting between Eris and Resha.
Reader's Guide
Cosmic Break is significant as a free-to-play MMO that combined third-person shooting with extensive robot customization, featuring over 100 robots and 300 parts and weapons. Players could mix and match parts, use a skin editor for texture painting, and reshape heads with a polygon editor. The game offered three modes: Arena (up to 60-player matches, including Union Wars and Team Fights with Capture the Flag), Mission (co-op against NPCs with five difficulty levels), and Quest (treasure hunting and mazes). Communication included animated emoticons, voice chat, regular chat with multiple modes, and radio messages with Japanese voice acting. Despite its customization depth, the game received mixed reviews and heavy criticism for its pay-to-win monetisation model using gashapon-style gambling mechanics. Its legacy includes a sequel with different mechanics and a later Steam re-release as CosmicBreak Universal.
