Clone Wars Adventures

A free-to-play Star Wars virtual world with paid membership tiers.

Clone Wars Adventures

Clone Wars Adventures was an online virtual world based on the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It allowed players to create avatars, participate in mini-games, and earn Republic credits within a setting that included the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and other planets. The game was free to download and play, but a paid membership was required for access to most features, and premium items could be purchased with Station Cash, a real-money currency.

Lore & Background

Clone Wars Adventures was set in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant between the films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Players could interact with characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Mace Windu, Yoda, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and play more than 20 mini-games including Lightsaber Duel, Republic Defender, and Speeder Bike Racing. The game also featured campaign-based mini-games from Seasons 3, 4, and 5 of The Clone Wars, and players could travel to planets like Ryloth, Umbara, and Carlac via the hangar bay. Communication options included world chat, private chat, a buddy list, and an ignore list, with members able to create player guilds called squads.

Reader's Guide

Clone Wars Adventures reached a milestone of 10 million registered players, and the first ten million received a free Golden Death Watch set along with a presentation of game statistics from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). The game followed a business model similar to Free Realms, but unlike Free Realms, it was released at retail despite being free-to-play. On January 24, 2014, SOE announced the game would shut down on March 31, 2014. The game's economy used Republic Credits earned in-game and Station Cash purchased with real money. Members had access to VIP areas, more mini-games, dual-lightsabers, the Jedi battle class, and a deluxe house. Battle classes introduced in September 2012 included Jedi, Trooper, Sith, and Mercenary, with the Sith and Mercenary classes requiring a Station Cash purchase. The game's significance lies in its integration of a popular franchise with a free-to-play model that restricted content behind subscriptions and microtransactions, a common approach in the early 2010s.
