History
Dawn Raid Entertainment was launched in 1999 by childhood friends Danny “Brotha D” Leaosavai’i and Andy Murnane. The name came from the 1970s and 1980s dawn raids, which unfairly targeted New Zealand’s Pasifika communities.
To raise startup money, they sold T-shirts at an Ōtara market. The label briefly went into liquidation in 2007. In 2020, filmmaker Oscar Kightley directed a documentary also titled Dawn Raid, which Universal distributed and released in New Zealand cinemas on 21 January 2021.
