History

The sports club Slovan Bratislava was founded in 1919 as a football club called 1.CsSK Bratislava. A hockey section, CsSK hockey, was established in 1921. The team played its first game in December 1924 against Wiener EV from Vienna, losing 6–1. In 1948, the club was renamed Slovan Bratislava. For many years after World War II, Slovan was the only Slovak team in the top Czechoslovak league, finishing second several times. The sole Czechoslovak championship came in the 1978–79 season under coach Ladislav Horsky. It is one of only four clubs to play all four seasons of the European Hockey League, reaching the playoffs each year. Slovan won the IIHF Continental Cup in the 2003–04 season. In March 2012, the club applied to join the KHL and was officially admitted on 21 June 2012. Rostislav Čada was signed as head coach for the first KHL season. The team opened the 2012–13 season with a 2–4 home loss to HC Donbass on 6 September 2012, and achieved its first win four days later against Spartak Moscow in a shootout. During the NHL lockout, defenders Ľubomír Višňovský and Andrej Sekera played for the team. Slovan finished the regular season with 78 points as sixth in the Western Conference and qualified for the playoffs, where they lost all four games to defending champion Dynamo Moscow.

Stadium

HC Slovan Bratislava calls the Ondrej Nepela Stadium home, a venue also referred to as Tipos Aréna. This rink first opened its doors on 15 December 1940, making it Bratislava’s first facility with artificial ice. A roof went up in 1957, bringing capacity to 7,000. Ahead of the 1992 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships, the arena underwent renovations that boosted its seating to 7,747. Slovakia’s hosting of the 2011 IIHF World Championship prompted an almost complete rebuild between 2009 and 2011, and additional upgrades followed in 2019 for that year’s Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships.

Logo

The rebranding of four leading Bratislava clubs in ice hockey, basketball, and volleyball marked their unification under new owner JTRE Sports & Entertainment. From June 2025, the clubs operate under a single name: Slovan Bratislava. The new visual identity was created by the agency 2:Score, which has worked on rebranding for Sparta Prague football club and Kometa Brno ice hockey club, among other projects.

Rivalries

Slovan Bratislava's biggest rival in the Czechoslovak league was HK Dukla Trenčín. In the Slovak Extraliga, key rivals include HC Košice, HK Dukla Trenčín, and HK Nitra. During its first two KHL seasons, Slovan's fiercest opponent was Lev Prague. That rivalry ignited when Lev's Zdeno Chára hit Slovan captain Miroslav Šatan, who missed the rest of the season; the hit's fairness sparked debate. Lev Praha disbanded after the 2013–14 season.
