Fanning
Every kill is a bandage; every bandage is a reason to swing again.
Fanning is one of the playable Hunters in Hunt: Showdown, a young and fiercely aggressive gunslinger who fights for The Company in the cursed Louisiana bayou. Where other Hunters rely on patience, traps, or stealth, Fanning thrives in the chaos of direct confrontation, turning every kill into a lifeline that lets him push forward when his health is running thin.
As a character, Fanning embodies the raw, blood-soaked energy of the Hunt itself—the desperate, violent ritual the Company stages to keep the bayou's ancient curse from spilling over. His design rewards players who prefer to hunt the hunters, closing distance, forcing engagements, and letting the kill itself be his medicine.

Lore & Background
Fanning is a young man who came to the bayou with more fire in his belly than sense in his head. The Company recruited him not for his skill with a rifle—though he has that—but for his willingness to walk into a firefight that would make older Hunters turn and run. In a world where the curse festers beneath the cypress roots and the Hunt is less a sport than a desperate sacrament, Fanning sees every engagement as a chance to prove he belongs among the Company's ranks rather than merely serving them.
His connection to the curse is indirect but real. The Hunt exists to channel the bayou's malice into a contained, ritualized violence, and Fanning's Bloodlust is a small echo of that cycle: blood taken, blood returned, the hunter made whole by the very act of taking life. He does not question why the Company sends him into the muck at dawn. He questions only why he never gets to be the one calling the shots.
Among the other Hunters, Fanning is the one who laughs mid-gunfight, the one who checks his magazine with one hand while reloading the other, the one who treats a 50/50 health state not as a warning to retreat but as an invitation. His youth is both his greatest asset and his most likely undoing, and the Company knows it. They keep him close to the front lines precisely because a young man who heals on kill is a young man who will not stop coming forward.
Reader's Guide
Fanning — 'The Bloodlust'
Ability: Bloodlust. When Fanning kills an enemy Hunter, he heals a portion of his maximum health. This is not a passive trickle; it is a discrete heal that triggers on the kill itself. The practical effect is that Fanning can absorb a hit, push the fight, and come out the other side with more health than he walked in with—provided he lands the killing blow. He does not heal on assists, and he does not heal from environmental damage. The kill is the medicine.
When to use it: Fanning is at his best in aggressive, close-to-mid-range engagements. Use him when you want to force fights rather than avoid them. If you are already in a duel and your health is dropping, Fanning's Bloodlust turns a losing exchange into a survivable one. He is less effective in slow, attritional maps where fights are rare, because his healing is tied directly to kills, not to time or positioning.
Tactical archetype: Aggressive frontline. Fanning is not a support, not a stealth operator, not a utility enabler. He is the Hunter who walks into the crossfire and expects to walk out with a full health bar and a grin. Build your team around his aggression: pair him with a support who can keep him topped off before the fight, or with a stealth Hunter who can flank while Fanning draws fire.
Lore tie-in: Fanning serves The Company as a frontline operative in the Hunt, the ritualized culling that keeps the bayou's curse from spreading. His Bloodlust is a small, personal echo of the larger cycle the Company enforces: violence begets survival, survival begets more violence. He is the Company's answer to the question, 'What do we do with a young man who cannot stop swinging?'
Weapon and artifact notes: Fanning pairs well with fast-firing, close-range weapons—shotguns, lever-action rifles, or fast semi-automatics—that let him close the distance and land the killing blow quickly. A weapon with high damage-per-shot reduces the number of hits he needs to secure the kill that triggers his heal. For artifacts, look for items that boost his damage output or reduce his cooldowns, since his healing is purely kill-gated. Avoid artifacts that reward slow, sustained fire or long-range precision; they do not synergize with his playstyle. A team artifact that grants a small heal on kill would be a natural complement, stacking with Bloodlust for a more forgiving aggressive loop.
Did You Know?
- Fanning is one of the Hunters who can be deployed in the same match as other Hunters, meaning his aggressive playstyle can be combined with support or stealth characters in a single team.
- The Hunt, the ritualized event Fanning participates in, is framed within the game's lore as a necessary containment of a supernatural curse rooted in the Louisiana bayou, not merely a competitive sport.
